The Bruised Behind Bars concept devloped for me early on because I went to jail with bruises on my face from my ex-husband, who claimed falsely to be a victim. I had to get a CT scan and cleared for head injury before I could be taken to the jail the first time on January 16th, 2020 due to the bruises he caused to me. I was told by the deputies at the hospital, "do not worry, he will be the one behind bars soon. This will get straightened out." The bruises were seen on my face by many who knew Donald Emmi caused them after he assaulted me in front of our children the evening of January 8th, 2020. After he hit me, I packed my children and myself and got away from him on a "safety plan." He came to where I was and lied to police. Noelle Kerridge was the investigator on all of my cases from day one and never did ANY investigation about what really happened.
I went to jail on January 25th, 2021 and I have not seen the outside of a jail or prison since and I have been brutalized, beaten, and raped in the prison system while being wrongfully incarcerated. I have not been alone as I have seen countless others abused as well, carrying their own bruises. In addition, I have encountered many women who were also victims of domestic violence and are wrongfully serving time due to lies of their abusers or because they were defending their own lives or the lives of their children.
Although you cannot see some of the bruises on the outside of their bodies, I assure you, they are there. We remain trapped behind the walls of silence, where our voices are blocked from being heard. With Bruised Behind Bars, I am going to give us a voice now and forever. I have learned of the injustices in the system and I am going to do what I can to advocate and correct these wrongs. Your life can be taken by weaponization of our system in the blink of an eye. The corruption fueled by greed in my cases could be corrected by District Attorney Integrity Units in each jurisdiction. Additionally, there needs to be better management when children are involved in cases of domestic violence. They need to have a Guardian Ad Litem or other advocate assigned so that they do not have one parent or the other alienated from them.
